5 Costly ACA Mistakes Florida Families Make

1

Choosing the cheapest premium without checking the deductible

A $0/month plan with a $9,000 deductible can cost far more than a $150/month silver plan with cost-sharing reductions.

2

Not reporting income changes mid-year

If your income increases and you don't update your application, you may owe back a large portion of your subsidy at tax time.

3

Missing the Special Enrollment Period after a life event

Job loss, marriage, birth, and moving all trigger a 60-day SEP. Missing it means waiting until November.

4

Ignoring cost-sharing reductions (CSR) on silver plans

If your income is under 250% FPL, silver plans come with dramatically lower deductibles and copays — but only if you choose silver.

5

Not checking if your doctors are in-network

ACA plans have narrow networks. Verify your doctors before enrolling — not after your first bill.

ACA Subsidy — Common Questions

What is the ACA Open Enrollment Period in Florida?

Florida follows the federal ACA marketplace calendar: November 1 – January 15. Coverage starting January 1 requires enrollment by December 15. Enrolling January 1–15 gives you February 1 coverage.

What is a Premium Tax Credit (APTC)?

The Advance Premium Tax Credit is a subsidy that reduces your monthly health insurance premium. It's based on your estimated household income and family size. You can take it as a monthly reduction or claim it on your tax return.

Can I get ACA coverage if I'm self-employed?

Yes — self-employed individuals are among the biggest beneficiaries of ACA subsidies. Your net self-employment income (after deductions) is used to calculate your subsidy. A licensed agent can help you optimize your income reporting.

What happens if I underestimate my income?

If your actual income is higher than estimated, you'll repay some or all of the excess subsidy when you file taxes. If lower, you'll receive a refund. Updating your income estimate mid-year through the marketplace prevents large year-end surprises.

Is there a penalty for not having ACA coverage in Florida?

There is no federal penalty since 2019. Florida also has no state individual mandate. However, going uninsured exposes you to significant financial risk — a single hospitalization can cost $30,000+.
