Florida Business Risk Assessment

Most Florida small businesses have at least one critical coverage gap they don't know about. Find yours before a claim does.

Risk Assessment

Florida Business Coverage Risk Factors

Any "Critical" flag is a serious exposure. Review all flags with a licensed commercial agent before your next renewal.

Liability Exposure

Critical

No General Liability policy

A single slip-and-fall or property damage claim can exceed $100,000. GL is the foundation of any business insurance program.

High Risk

GL limits below $1M per occurrence

Many contracts and commercial leases require $1M minimum. Inadequate limits expose your personal assets.

High Risk

No Professional Liability (E&O) for service businesses

If you provide advice, consulting, or professional services, a client can sue for errors or omissions. GL does not cover this.

Review

No Cyber Liability coverage

Florida businesses face significant cyber risk. A data breach can cost $200,000+ in notification, legal, and recovery costs.

Property & Operations

High Risk

Business property not separately insured

Your homeowners policy does NOT cover business equipment used at home. A separate BOP or commercial property policy is needed.

High Risk

No Business Interruption coverage

If a covered loss forces you to close temporarily, BI coverage replaces lost income and pays ongoing expenses during the shutdown.

Critical

Commercial vehicles not on a commercial auto policy

Personal auto policies exclude business use. If an employee has an accident in a company vehicle, you may have zero coverage.

Review

No inland marine coverage for equipment off-premises

Tools and equipment at job sites or in transit are often excluded from standard commercial property policies.

Employees & Workers

Critical

No Workers' Compensation (required in FL for 4+ employees)

Florida requires WC for businesses with 4+ employees (1+ in construction). Penalties for non-compliance include fines and stop-work orders.

Review

No Employment Practices Liability (EPLI)

Wrongful termination, harassment, and discrimination claims are among the fastest-growing business lawsuits. EPLI covers your defense costs.

Review

No key person life insurance

If a key owner or employee dies, the business may struggle to survive. Key person insurance provides capital to recruit, train, or buy out a partner.

Review

No buy-sell agreement funded by life insurance

Without a funded buy-sell, a partner's death or disability can force a business sale or family dispute over ownership.

Business Insurance — Common Questions

Is Workers' Compensation required in Florida?

Yes, for most businesses. Construction companies with 1 or more employees must have WC. Non-construction businesses with 4 or more employees (including part-time) are required to carry it. Agricultural employers have different thresholds. Penalties for non-compliance include fines and stop-work orders.

What is a Business Owner's Policy (BOP)?

A BOP bundles General Liability and Commercial Property into a single policy, typically at a lower cost than buying them separately. It's designed for small to mid-size businesses and often includes Business Interruption coverage. Not all businesses qualify — high-risk industries may need separate policies.

Does my homeowners insurance cover my home-based business?

No. Standard homeowners policies exclude business activities, business equipment, and business liability. If you operate a business from home, you need either a home-based business endorsement or a separate commercial policy.

What is the difference between General Liability and Professional Liability?

General Liability covers bodily injury, property damage, and advertising injury caused by your business operations. Professional Liability (E&O) covers claims that your professional advice or services caused a financial loss to a client. Service businesses need both.
